The Roots Officially Drop Birthday Girl From Rising Down

“Birthday Girl,” the Roots now defunct single that’s been catching headlines apparently has a long history, ?uestlove announces. The Roots made headlines a few weeks ago when the single “Birthday Girl” was mysteriously bumped from the group’s upcoming album Rising Down. Today, ?uestlove cleared the record and explained the move, “It was just sticking out like a sore thumb,” he said. The album’s content, ?uestlove says, is too political and incendiary for a track like “Birthday Girl,” which has a completely different tone. “Add up [the crime and high school drop-out rates in Philadelphia], plus being in your mid-30s and working 300 nights a year and this being an election year — yeah, all that’s what this album’s about,” says ?uestlove.

The track is not a new development however, as ?uestlove revealed the track has been around since 2004, originally intended to be released on the The Tipping Point. The single’s fate didn’t end there, “Then we tried to make it the last song on the record, and that wasn’t working,” he states. “Then we tried to make it the hidden track, and that wasn’t effective. Basically the album was complete; it starts with ‘Rising Down’ and it ends with ‘Rising Up,’ so that makes more sense to me.” The song will be released on iTunes however, and a video is being filmed. OkayPlayer confirmed this, posting shots of the video, which will feature porn star Sasha Gray. Rising Down is set to drop April 29.
