RapTalk.net Exclusive Q&A Interview Session w/ Marco Polo

Raptalk.net this week got the opportunity to hook up with Canadian, New York based producer Marco Polo. Marco this year released his long overdue debut album “Port Authority” featuring some of the biggest emcees in Hip Hop through Soulspazm / Rawkus Records. He sits down with Rap Talk to talk about the album, his up coming collaboration project with Brooklyn emcee Torae and what he’s experienced in his career so far. Make sure you check out this new remix of the track “The Radar” featuring Large Professor at the end of the interview.

Dub MD: Marco Polo, What’s good?
Marco Polo: I’m good just working man, after Port Authority I gotta step it up even more now!

Dub MD: For those who don’t know, could you just give a short review of what you’ve experienced in your rap career up until now?
Marco Polo: I’ve seen a lot, I’ve seen your favourite rapper act like a bitch behind closed doors, I’ve seen some the greatest MC’s to do it come through my studio and record classics, I’ve also seen the ugly side of the industry where people try to take advantage of you.

Dub MD: Coming from Toronto but based in Brooklyn, what do you think of the New York music scene right now?
Marco Polo: It’s cool. There is always talent lingering but the mainstream radio definitely doesn’t represent it. I can count the actual radio stations playing good Hip Hop. Shouts to The Halftime show and Late Night with Peter Rosenberg.

Dub MD: What do you think of the commercialisation of Hip Hop right now, do you think its showing respect to its pioneers?
Marco Polo: Yes and No. I always feel like collaborating with pioneers has a stronger impact then shouting them out. But, I think the younger generation could definitely use a better history lesson.

Dub MD: Your new album “Port Authority” in stores right now, for those who haven’t heard it yet, what can heads out there expect to hear?
Marco Polo: Good Hip Hop, featuring Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, Buckshot, O.C., Kardinall Offishall, Jo Jo Pellegrino, DV Alias Khryst. I’m extremely proud of this project, you can rock it top to bottom.

“I’ve seen a lot, I’ve seen your favourite rapper act like a bitch behind closed doors, I’ve seen some the greatest MC’s to do it come through my studio and record classics”

Dub MD: You had great chemistry on the two tracks you done with Supastition & Masta Ace, How did you hook up with them for the album?
Marco Polo: I met Supastition through friends I think. I had got him some beats and after that we started working on music gradually. Ace I met through working at The Cutting Room. I gave him a beat cd when he came through for a Beatnuts session. Then he picked something for “A Long Hot Summer”.

Dub MD: Do you have any collaboration albums in the works with any artists at the moment?
Marco Polo: Yeah, I’m working with a dope up and coming MC by the name of Torae out of Coney Island, BK. He had a few songs out that DJ Premier produced “Get it Done” & “Click”. He also has his own mixtape/album dropping called “Daily Conversation” in early January.

Dub MD: What do you think is your most defining and unique characteristic that sets you apart from every other producer out there?
Marco Polo: I take my time with music. I speak up when I don’t like something and build with MC’s to make the best product. and I stay involved in all the stages of the creation e.g. Recording, mixing & mastering.

Dub MD: If you could describe yourself as a producer in 4 words, What would they be?
Marco Polo: Perfectionist, Stubborn, Humbled & Awesome.

Dub MD: What is on tap for Marco Polo for the rest of 2007 and beyond?
Marco Polo: Continue working with great artists. I just did a track for Rakim’s new album!

Dub MD: Do you have anything to say to the fans? anything you wanna get off your chest? any shout outs?
Marco Polo: thanks for all the support from fans via myspace (
www.myspace.com/marcopolobeats) and my website (www.marcopolobeats.com). It’s much appreciated. peace.
